▎추리소설의 여왕 아가사 크리스티(Agatha Christie)

영국 출신의 ‘아가사 크리스티’는 80여 편의 추리소설을 쓰면서 추리소설계의 여왕으로 지금까지 추앙받고 있습니다. 1890년 9월 15일 영국 데번 주 토키에서 미국인 아버지와 영국 귀족 출신 어머니 사이에서 태어나 1976년 1월 12일 향년 85세의 나이로 사망했습니다. 

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, DBE (née Miller; 15 September 1890 – 12 January 1976) was an English crime novelist, short story writer and playwright. She is best known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, notably those revolving around the investigative work of her fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple. She also wrote the world's longest-running play, a murder mystery, The Mousetrap, and six romances under the name Mary Westmacott. In 1971 she was made a Dame for her contribution to literature.

 

 

▎아가사 크리스티 그녀의 이름은 본명일까?

우리가 알고 있는 ‘아가사 크리스티’라는 이름은 정확히 필명입니다. 본명은 ‘아가사 메리 클러리사 밀러 크리스티 맬로언’(Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller Christie Mallowan)입니다. 이름 참 길죠? 그런데 그녀의 이름에는 그녀의 인생이 그대로 담겨있습니다. 원래 처녀 때 성(姓)은 밀러(Miller)였어요. 그런데 군인인 아치볼드 크리스티(Archibald Christie)라는 사람과 결혼하면서 그들의 작명 문화에 따라 크리스티(Christie)라는 성(姓)을 갖게 됩니다. 이후 아치볼드와 이혼하고 14세 연하의 고고학자였던 맥스 맬로언(Max Mallowan)과 재혼했으나 이미 크리스티라는 성으로 명성을 얻은 뒤라 이혼한 남편의 성을 같이 쓰게 되었다고 하네요. 그래서 크리스티 맬로언(Christie Mallowan)이라는 긴 성을 쓰게 되었습니다. 이젠 대충 이름의 의미를 아시겠죠?

Christie was born into a wealthy upper-middle-class family in Torquay, Devon. She served in a hospital during the First World War before marrying and starting a family in London. She was initially unsuccessful at getting her work published, but in 1920 the publication of The Mysterious Affair at Styles, featuring Hercule Poirot, launched her literary career.

메리 웨스트매컷(Mary Westmacott). 추리소설 작가로 유명한 그녀는 연애소설을 6 편 집필했는데 그 때 사용했던 필명이 바로 '메리 웨스트매컷'이죠. 추리소설 독자들을 혼동시키지 않기 위해 다른 필명을 쓴 것으로 이 사실은 그녀의 의지에 따라 50년 가까이 비밀에 부쳐졌다고 합니다.(1930년부터 1956년까지) 그녀의 풀네임에 들어간 'Mary'는 또 다른 필명에서 온 것이지요. 이런 것을 종합해 보면

그녀의 작품은 영어권에서만 10억 부 이상 팔렸으며 103개의 언어로 번역된 다른 언어판들도 10억 부 이상 판매되었습니다. 기네스북에는 셰익스피어의 작품과 성경에 이어 최고의 베스트셀러 작가로 등제되어있다고 합니다. 그리고 그녀가 쓴 연극 '쥐덫'은 1952년 11월 25일 영국 런던의 ‘앰버서더 시어터’에서 초연된 이래 2012년까지 25,000회가 공연되었습니다. 이밖에도 그녀의 기록은 모두 표현할 수 없을 정도로 많고도 많습니다.

Her novels have sold roughly 2 billion copies, and her estate claims that her works come third in the rankings of the world's most-widely published books, behind only Shakespeare's works and the Bible. According to Index Translationum, she remains the most-translated individual author – having been translated into at least 103 languages. And Then There Were None is Christie's best-selling novel, with 100 million sales to date, making it the world's best-selling mystery ever, and one of the best-selling books of all time.

1억 부 이상 판매. 이 책으로 그녀는 세계 최고 베스트셀러로 등극했으며 아울러 이 책은 약 103개 언어로 번역되어 최다 번역작이 된 것으로도 유명합니다. 지금도 전 세계에서 영화, 연극, 드라마로 각색되고 있습니다. 그리고 이 책의 원래 제목은 10개의 검둥이 인형(Ten Little Niggers)이었습니다.

▎아가사 크리스티, 그녀의 작품들

추리소설 <약 80권>, 애정소설 <6권>

제1차 세계대전에 남편이 참전하자 자신도 간호사로 지원하였고, 그 경험을 바탕으로 전쟁 말기에 처녀작 ‘스타일즈장(莊) 살인사건’을 집필하여 1920년에 간행합니다. 이것을 시작으로 정말 많은 책을 출간하는데 책 이름은 너무 많아서 일일이 다 쓰는 것은 불가능 합니다.

Christie's stage play The Mousetrap holds the record for the longest initial run: it opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End on 25 November 1952 and as of 2015 is still running after more than 25,000 performances. In 1955 Christie was the first recipient of the Mystery Writers of America's highest honour, the Grand Master Award. Later the same year, Witness for the Prosecution received an Edgar Award by the MWA for Best Play. In 2013, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was voted the best crime novel ever by 600 fellow writers of the Crime Writers' Association. On 15 September 2015, coinciding with Christie's 125th birthday, And Then There Were None was voted as the "World's Favourite Christie", followed closely by Murder on the Orient Express and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Most of her books and short stories have been adapted for television, radio, video games and comics, and more than thirty feature films have been based on her work.

그녀는 첫 남편과 이혼한 후, 14세 연하였던 고고학자와 재혼했는데 이때 재혼한 소감을 묻는 기자의 질문에 "고고학자는 여성에게는 최고의 남편감이에요. 여자가 늙으면 늙을수록 남편이 더욱 흥미를 가질 테니까요."
